Our approach

Resilient communities that grow from within.

Lasting change is shaped by the people who live in a place. Al-Fusaha gives them somewhere to meet, and the support and connections to act together.

Where it comes from

Support that lasts beyond a project.

The approach grew out of humanitarian practice in Syria, and from the need to keep support going after individual projects end.

Al-Fusaha is developed by Pioneers Innovation for Sustainability and Impact, a social enterprise set up to address social and economic challenges in Syria. Its mission is to connect local initiative with the tools, resources and opportunities to develop solutions that last: for nonprofits and community leaders, micro and small businesses, and young people and local talent.

The vision: a connected ecosystem in the region, where local potential and collaboration sustain social change.

Theory of change

Two pathways that strengthen each other

Economic opportunity and stronger relationships reinforce one another. Al-Fusaha brings both into one approach to locally led change.

Transformative entrepreneurship

Economic and social value

Useful activity, skills and market links that help reduce poverty.

Conflict transformation

Trust across differences

Greater trust and less prejudice between groups who rarely meet.

Shared economic activity can build relationships. Working on something together creates reasons to meet again.

Cooperation can widen economic opportunity. People who trust each other find partners, customers and ideas.

Local communities sustain the process, with flexible structures that endure as the context changes.

The space as a platform

What makes the space work

A lasting place gives continuity. Relationships give it life. Local leadership gives it direction. Together they let new responses emerge as needs change.

An adaptable structure

A place that lasts

An accessible, lasting space gives continuity. People know where to find each other, and the work does not end with a project.

Continuing processes

Relationships that grow

Repeated encounters, shared work and continuing learning give the space its life. Trust is built by working together, again and again.

Local leadership

People decide what to build

Local people set the priorities and lead what emerges. The space adapts with its community as needs change.

How change takes root

A cycle of locally led action

Each centre starts with its context. Its programme develops through participation, shared work and learning, then adapts as needs change.

Progress means useful relationships and shared action, as well as attendance.

Access and sustainability

Who pays and who benefits

The person who benefits from a service is not always the person who pays for it. A hybrid model connects both, and keeps local needs visible.

People and communities

Local organisations, small businesses and young people bring needs and feedback.

Customers and partners

Paying users, programme partners and institutional clients make support possible.

In practice: paid use of the rooms helps sustain the centre, alongside free access for unfunded local initiatives. Every booking on this website is part of that.

Outcomes and learning

The change we seek

Does useful activity develop into lasting economic opportunity, stronger relationships and local capacity to lead?

  1. Livelihoods

    More viable economic activity

Do skills and market links lead to sustained income?

  2. Relationships

    Cooperation across groups

Do people continue to work together?

  3. Local agency

    Locally led responses

Do local actors shape and sustain initiatives?

What we need to learn: baselines agreed with partners, and reviews of access and participant experience alongside income, cooperation and local decisions. The key conditions are inclusive access, viable demand and the resources to keep support active.

In practice · Al-Fusaha Daraa

Rooted in Daraa. Open to possibility.

A community hub that brings nonprofit organisations, local initiatives and entrepreneurs together to learn, build relationships and create social and economic value.

It began as a family home, opened to a wider civic purpose: a place of memory and gathering where the community meets for dialogue, creativity and collective work. The hub connects people who rarely meet, and gives them room to explore different perspectives and imagine new possibilities.
